Telaga Sarangan: Hidden Lake in East Java

Relaxing travel destination at Telaga Sarangan in East Java Indonesia

Telaga Sarangan: Is It Worth Visiting?

Just a few hours from Surabaya lies a peaceful mountain lake that most international travelers have never heard of.

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Lawu, Telaga Sarangan offers cool mountain air, scenic views, and a completely different vibe from Indonesia’s tropical beach destinations. Forget the tropical paradise of Bali, this is a place to chill and leave your daily hustle behind!

It’s not luxurious. It’s not world-famous.

But that’s exactly what makes it special.

I instantly fell in love with this lake, and even compared it with the infamous Como Lake (I know I was just kidding since I’ve never been to that Italian lake). But, do they look alike? Let’s take a look and do your own interpretation.

So, if you’re looking for a quiet, local, and refreshing escape in Indonesia, or East Java specifically, this place might surprise you.

Where Is Telaga Sarangan?

Telaga Sarangan is located in Magetan Regency, East Java, near the border with Central Java.

It sits at an altitude of around 1,200 meters above sea level, which means it has cooler temperatures (around 15–20°C), fresh mountain air, and misty, calming atmosphere. Pretty much an oasis from the tropical heat!

The lake is also located near Mount Lawu, a popular hiking destination among Indonesian trekkers.

So, Why Visit Telaga Sarangan?

1. A Rare Cool-Climate Escape in Indonesia

Unlike most of Indonesia’s hot and humid destinations, Telaga Sarangan offers a refreshing break. You might even need a jacket—something uncommon in tropical Southeast Asia. I had a chance to visit the lake during rainy season, and that makes me chilling, like every single dawn!

2. Beautiful Lake Surrounded by Mountains

The lake is relatively small but incredibly scenic, surrounded by green hills and often covered in light mist during the morning. Like I said before, this lake really raised my imagination of Como Lake in Italy. It has several amazing spots if you’re into photography. Here are some of them:

3. Unique Local Experience

One of the most iconic activities here is riding a horse around the lake—something you won’t commonly find in other Indonesian destinations. There’re also boat-ride services if you want to get closer with the lake that is prohibited from swimming. It is linked with some myths, but there were some incidents involving the violators, and some ended in a worst possible way-death! So, it is best to avoid that.

4. Affordable Local Food

You’ll find plenty of local stalls selling:

  • Satay (grilled skewers). Generally, there are 2 kinds of meat available: chicken and rabbit.
  • Warm soups (perfect for the cold weather)
  • Traditional snacks (Indonesians have a great fond of gorengan (deep-fried stuffs), so try having some fried banana while staring at the misty lake will surely give you a unique local experience)

In the past, hawkers of Sarangan had a very bad reputation of practicing scams towards visitors. Fortunately, things have improved a lot. Nowadays, it is mandatory for hawkers located around the lake to put the pricelist. Nevertheless, if you didn’t find one, please ask the price beforehand. You wouldn’t like to get ripped for 10 pieces of chicken satay.

5. Peaceful, Untouristy Atmosphere

Unlike Bali or Yogyakarta, Telaga Sarangan is mostly visited by domestic tourists. During my 2 day visit, I simply didn’t see any foreigner. But, that means:

  • Fewer crowds (especially on weekdays)
  • More authentic local vibes (and local food, too!)
  • Slower pace of travel

Just simply walk encircling the mesmerizing lake (the road is paved) and feel the mountain breeze. Trust me, the feeling is gold!

How to Get to Telaga Sarangan?

From Surabaya:

Okay, let’s be honest. This place might not be the easiest place to reach. While it is not as difficult to reach as Natuna, it is still far more difficult than any major tourist destination in Java, like Borobudur. There is no direct public transportation connecting the lake with Indonesian large cities. The tour provider might not be as rampant as other Java destinations, let’s say Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.

So, in my opinion, the easiest way is from Surabaya, as it is one of Indonesia’s major gateway. It serves various domestic and international routes. Thera are various way from Surabaya:

  • By car: this is, by far, the fastest yet most convenient way to reach the lake. The journey takes nearly 4–5 hours. Road condition is fairly good, with Surabaya-Madiun route is connected by the renowned Trans Java Highway. You can also make a brief stopover at Madiun before proceeding to the lake, which is located not far from Magetan town. Madiun is renowned for its mouth-watering nasi pecel (Indonesian version of salad with peanut sauce)
  • By public transport: several bus companies connect Surabaya with Magetan or Madiun. You can also reach Madiun from Yogyakarta by train. From those towns, one has to seek the local transport. It is extremely hard due to the scarcity of information, even by locals.

Pro Tip:

Public transport can be tricky for international travelers (and even for some Indonesians). We, Indonesians, are well known for our sincerity, but definitely not our public transportation system!

In a nutshell, renting a car and hiring a driver is the most convenient option.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Telaga Sarangan?

The best time to visit is during the dry season (April–October). During these months, there is usually low chance of raining (although no one could guarantee it), so you’ll have much flexibility to explore and enjoy the area.

I visited in late December, which is the peak of rain season of the country, and spent most of the time at the lodge. I was lucky enough that I picked an ultimately cozy lodge. Its name is Sarangsari Hills, and simply couldn’t ask for a better service and place to stay. It was superb!

If you, by any chance, visit there during rainy season, the best time to get around the lake is at the morning, as the mist is still tolerable.

Tips:

Avoid weekends & holidays, since it can get really crowded with local tourists. The narrow path encircling the lake could be packed with humans!

If you are looking for the best place to stay in Sarangan, then this amazing place could be a great idea!

The Local Legend of Telaga Sarangan

Like many places in Indonesia, Telaga Sarangan has its own legend.

It is said that a couple named Ki Pasir and Nyai Pasir transformed into dragons, creating the lake. This myth is still widely believed and adds a cultural depth to the destination.

For international visitors, this story offers a glimpse into Javanese folklore and beliefs.

Is Telaga Sarangan Worth Visiting?

Yes—but it depends on what you’re looking for.

You’ll love it if you:

  • Enjoy nature and peaceful environments
  • Want to explore beyond mainstream destinations
  • Appreciate local, authentic experiences

You might skip it if you:

  • Prefer luxury resorts
  • Expect world-class tourist infrastructure
  • Are short on time and prioritizing top-tier destinations

Final Thoughts

Telaga Sarangan is not Indonesia’s most famous destination—and that’s exactly why it’s worth visiting.

It offers something increasingly rare with travel in this modern age: simplicity, authenticity, and calmness

For those willing to explore beyond the usual tourist routes, this quiet mountain lake can be a surprisingly memorable stop in East Java.
