Formerly known as Batavia, Jakarta serves as the country’s main hub and economic center. Certainly, most travelers will arrive in this Indonesian city, thanks to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which is considered as the South East Asian nation’s major gateway. While everything seems to be crowded and fast-paced, this densely populated city still hides its hidden charm. At least that’s my very own thought as the city’s resident. Born and raised in Jakarta, I used to view my hometown skeptically, as this city is heavily burdened by flooding, traffic, crime, and pollution issues.

Nevertheless, I got my way of thinking changed after I did “playing tourist” in this Indonesian capital city. From the classic historical buildings to dazzling shopping malls, Jakarta has it all. So, what are the things to do in this city that never sleeps? Let’s take a glimpse!
1. The historical trail
This has always been my recommendation for the city’s first-timers. I always think that there’s no visit to a city without knowing its story in the past. Pay a visit to the National Museum on Medan Merdeka Barat Road, and you’ll be fascinated by this country’s rich history. Complete your trail by visiting the Kota Tua region, which means “old city” in Bahasa. Bank Indonesia Museum and Fatahillah Museum are two sites you don’t want to miss. While the former will tell us the long history of the nation’s currency, the latter will dismantle Indonesia’s colonial era. End your day by strolling around the area made of timeless colonial buildings.

2. The National Monument
The National Monument, not to be confused with the National Museum, is the city’s main symbol. Built in 1961 under the governance of the late President Soekarno, this 132 m-tall monument is located in proximity to the National Museum. The area surrounding the monument is so vast that it is often used as a mass gathering venue. The top of this monument is made of gold, so this structure symbolizes this country’s greatness in the past.

3. The mall trail
Indonesia is well known as home to tons of shopping malls. From the westernmost to easternmost province, almost every place has a mall thanks to our consumptive behaviour (not gonna lie, I’m trying my best to hide it). And with nearly a hundred malls in it, Jakarta simply becomes the mecca for shop-goers. Either a family-themed or high-end shopping mall, you could name it all. If you’re looking for a vast, luxurious place, Grand Indonesia & Plaza Indonesia would satisfy you. For a uniquely designed place, Central Park in West Jakarta would satisfy your visit with a fish pond and garden inside it.

4. Strolling around the city
Immersed with buses and trains, it wouldn’t be that hard to tell that the city’s transportation system is the most integrated one across the nation. Even though the traffic could be a pain in the arse, the good news is that nowadays most of the city’s main parts can be reached by public transport. Some areas even provide sightseeing bus service. What could be a more Jakarta experience than having yourself surrounded by concrete and being stuck in a traffic jam?

5. Leisuring on the island
Tired of the bustling city life? Take a boat ride and enjoy the province’s finest beach at Pulau Seribu. Meaning “thousand islands” in Bahasa Indonesia, this archipelago will serve you with beautiful white sandy beaches. I once visited the Harapan Island, and to be honest, it exceeded my expectations! Just make sure you do the research and pick the island beforehand, because the “thousand islands” name doesn’t come without any reason.

5. Visiting the zoo
Known for its rich biodiversity, Indonesia is home to various animal species. Unfortunately, this country is more than huge! And to discover them in their native habitat would be very, very challenging. So, if you’re an animal enthusiast with limited time, visiting the Ragunan Zoo would be worthwhile, since it has some national animal collections, such as the famous Komodo dragon and orangutan. Even if you’re not a wildlife geek, wandering this 140-hectare area would give you a special experience. Its densely formed vegetation would be a fine escape from the city’s fast-paced life.

My note: Jakarta is a rapidly developing city. Almost every other month, you would see something new in the city. For example, lately, the northern shore of the city is known for the infamous man-made island with various attractions. Therefore, making a good plan before stepping into this city would surely be a wise gesture. Enjoy Jakarta!
