Situated in the heart of East Java, Malang is truly a hidden gem. Constantly popular among Indonesian holidaymakers, the city is still relatively under the radar for international travelers. Most foreigners usually go straight to the enchanting Mount Bromo or the mighty Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
But Malang deserves more attention.
Spend a couple of days here and you will quickly understand why many locals love this charming city. I personally lived in Malang for five years, and I must admit that I enjoyed it even more than my hometown, Jakarta.

1. Fifteen Celsius
Located inside the Amaris Hotel complex in Batu, Fifteen Celsius offers one of the most scenic café experiences in the area. If you plan to stay overnight in Batu, this place is a perfect stop.
The café features several photogenic corners and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The best time to visit is in the late afternoon or early evening. During midday the sun can be quite intense, especially in the open seating area. As the sun sets, the lights of Batu city combined with decorative lamps create a romantic atmosphere.
Interestingly, the complex also has a small chapel, making it a unique venue for small weddings.
2. The Concrete
If you are willing to travel a little further, The Concrete will reward you with one of the most stunning views in the Malang area.
Located near the Cangar highlands, this two-storey café sits on top of a hill overlooking Malang and its surrounding valleys.
Getting there requires driving through a rather steep road, so visitors who drive themselves should be prepared. However, the breathtaking scenery makes the journey completely worthwhile.
3. Hill House
Hill House offers a cozy atmosphere with a very unique concept. The café combines beach-inspired design with a mountainous backdrop, creating a surprisingly relaxing vibe.
While the panoramic view may not be as dramatic as some other cafés in Batu, the ambiance here is excellent. Good music, stylish decorations, and comfortable seating make it a perfect place to hang out with friends.
The best time to visit is in the evening when the lights turn on and the atmosphere becomes even more vibrant.
4. Padaswatu
Located within Malang city itself, Padaswatu feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
You might not expect to find a café with beautiful rice field views in such a densely populated area, but that is exactly what makes this place special.
It is a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee or a slice of pizza while admiring the peaceful countryside scenery.
Try visiting around midday or early afternoon to avoid the heavy traffic that usually occurs during rush hour.
5. Rumah Gunung
If you love secluded cafés, Rumah Gunung might become your favorite spot.
As the name suggests, Rumah Gunung means “Mountain House”, and the café truly embraces a warm and homey concept. The atmosphere here is peaceful and relaxing, especially on weekdays when it is less crowded.
The sunset view is absolutely fantastic.
This café remains relatively unknown compared to other popular spots in Batu, which makes it even more special. The only drawback is that the location can be a bit difficult to reach. But if you do not mind the journey, you will be rewarded with one of the most memorable café experiences in Malang.
